Why I’m Choosing to Rebrand My Business + What You Can Expect

“Your only obligation in any lifetime is to be true to yourself.” - Richard Bach

Figuring out what to name your business can be exciting, complicated, anxiety provoking, or downright frustrating. For me it has been all of the above and much more.

As I was thinking about what to share with you today, my mind retraced all the steps, twists and turns that led me to where I am right now. While it's more than can be covered in one blog article, I want to share a bit of the backstory with you so this will all make sense.

The Backstory

I was introduced to the Mixed Media art community in fall 2011 and it was love at first sight!

I loved everything about this creative community. The variety of colors, textures, and materials that could be used to create a piece of art fascinated me. Prior to this, I had been a lifelong “dabbler”. Picking-up different art supplies here and there.

Mixed Media art allowed me to use all of my creative goodness in one place!

The studio became my playground and sparked the creation of Karla's Mixed Media Studio (KmmsArt) in October 2012. If you have been following me since the beginning, you might remember that my tag line was "Home of Passion, Play, and Heart".

Over time, I participated in art shows, crafts fairs, and eventually began to offer my art for sale online.

Art was my therapy.

Before this however, I founded my first business. Creative Counseling & Consultation Center was the place I poured all of my “helping” energy into. I provided counseling and eventually coaching services to adult individuals and groups. I loved this work immensely and felt great satisfaction from supporting people in this way.

I consciously kept these two businesses separate because the counseling was for "them" but the art was for "me".

I happily ran both businesses side by side for a few years. Overtime, however, something shifted. I found that my counseling work began to feel less fulfilling and more restrictive. While I still enjoyed serving my clients, "how" I was doing it stopped working for me.

I also began to experience feelings of discontent in my creative life. I started losing some of the joy that I had when I first found the mixed media art community.

My core values center around alignment and authenticity. The longer I ran these two businesses separately the more disconnected I became from these values.

I knew that something had to change, but I wasn't quite sure how to get from where I was to where I wanted to be.

Finding a New Name

This was about so much more than finding a new name. It was about finding a way to both live and work in authentic connection with myself!

“This was about finding a way to live and work in authentic connection with myself!”

Once I identified that things needed to change, I did a LOT of exploring. I knew that in order to figure out my next steps I would have to dig deep. I tried several different strategies including

  • Completing a life coach training program
  • Taking several online small business and creative classes
  • Writing in my journal (a lot!)
  • Talking to close friends & family
  • Spending time thinking, praying, worrying, etc.

You get the idea!

Eventually I came-up with a list that I narrowed down to two different names. As an introverted, creative, perfectionist, lets just say this was another adventure in and of itself!

I bounced back and forth between these two names for several months. I just couldn’t decide!

I went back to my journal to try and figure out what was holding me back. When I finally figured it out, I was able to move forward and find the perfect name.

I’m excited to share that Karla’s Mixed Media Studio is becoming Grow Joy! This new name also inspired a new/expanded mission.

The mission of Grow Joy is to inspire nurturing self-care and joyful connection through pictures, words, and movement.

These two little words, Grow Joy, represent several years of work, play, reflection, and growth. It brings my love of helping people and making things all together in one place!

What the Rebrand Means

Because I have run multiple small businesses, I have different brand identifies which need to be cleaned-up and simplified. That way, you'll easily be able to find the product or service you're looking for.

Changes to my social media & website

The first changes I've begun to make are to my website and social media accounts. You will see slight changes to the look and content of this website so it aligns with the new brand. I will also be changing the domain name to grow-joy.com and have set-up a new email account at karla@grow-joy.com. I will also be changing the names on my Instagram, Pinterest, & Facebook accounts to match.

Changes to content, product & service offerings

I will be sharing more frequently on the blog and will include a broader range of topics centered around self-care. This will still include art and creativity, but will also include writing, yoga, and faith. My goal is to share content that inspires, informs, and educates. I am also looking forward to creating new products and services to support your journey.

Are you feeling out of alignment?
While this article is about my reasons for choosing to rebrand this business, I’m wondering if you might be feeling out-of-synch in any areas of your life? Is it time for you to make a change?
